Since, I live in Nagaland, my interest on reading folklores about the culture and tradition of the different tribes living in Nagaland has become a never-ending quench.
This thirst led me to the works of different authors and writers, and
one of them is Easterine Kire. So in this article, I would like to highlight
five of her best works that is a must-read for everyone.

Who is
Easterine Kire?
Easterine Kire is an author and poet currently based in northern Norway. Her
writings portray the lives of the Naga people in particular and North-East in
general. She was born in March 1959 in Nagaland, and belongs to the Angami
tribe.
Easterine completed her schooling in Kohima, and later studied in
Shillong and Delhi. She holds a phD in English literature from Savitribai Phule
Pune University and has written several short stories, novels, and poems on
Naga tradition and culture.
Her first book was published in 1982 titled “Kelhoukevira” which was a
collection of poems. This book became the first published book about Naga
poetry in English. Later her novel “A Naga Village Remembered” also became the
first novel written by a Naga writer in English.

Kire Awards and Accolades
Easterine received many prestigious awards for her writings. She was
awarded the Bal Sahitya Puraskar in 2018 by the Sahitya Academy for “Son of the
Thundercloud”. She also received the Governor’s Medal for excellence in Naga
literature and the Free Voice Award by Catalan PEN, Barcelona.
She was also shortlisted for The Hindu Prize for her novel, “Bitter
Wormwood” in 2013. Her works have been translated into many languages,
including Catalan, Uzbek, German, Croatian, Nepali, and Norwegian. These
accolades made her one of the famous English poets of Nagaland.

tiger-spirit. The book follows the prophecy where it is stated that Mesanuo
will be impregnated by a single drop of rain and the tiger-spirit will be slain
by her son.

Father: A Naga Village Remembered
